FCC Unsure About Net Neutrality

Posted by Kallan Dahn Monday, November 30, 2009

FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker mentioned durring an interview with C-SPAN that she was unsure how the FCC would be able to impose net neutrality laws on wireless operators.  "What we don't want to do here, especially in the course of developing a national broadband plan, is to do anything that would harm the innovation and investment in these networks.", said Baker.

The commissioner is concerned about unintended consequences that could arise from the positioning of these new rules, wich are expected to govern both wireless and wireline telco operators.  The FCC is under a January 14th deadline for the initial comments of the rule draft.  Also under consideration is the CTIA's request for opening up bandwidth for mobile data.

"I don't expect we'd take all the broadcasters' spectrum, but I suspect that there might be some in there that might be more efficiently used in a commercial wireless sense," she said. "All ideas should be on the table."
