Posted by Kallan Dahn Saturday, November 1, 2008 0 comments

This video of a 3G pyramid cellular phone display is very impressive. The display is capable of mixing real world objects with holographic display video projection to catch attention. Catching attention this thing does very well. Have a look.

Toshiba's Methanol Fuel Cell for Cell Phones

Posted by Kallan Dahn Wednesday, October 1, 2008 0 comments

Toshiba has just announced a new DCMF (Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) that is small enough to fit into a cellular phone. A 50ml fuel cell refill would be enough to charge a cell phone 15 times, and last approximately 6 hours of talk time! This new fuel cell uses a chemical reaction between water, methanol, and air to create power. No specific date has been released for commercially availability of this new fuel cell, but they are working to try to make it available by next year.

SlotMusic: Sandisk Seeks Alternative to Digital Delivery

Posted by Kallan Dahn Monday, September 22, 2008 0 comments

SlotMusic is the brainchild of Sandisk. You know, the same guys that brought us MicroSD cards for our cell phones. Sandisk has teamed up with all the major figureheads of the recording industry to bring SlotMusic to a store near you. SlotMusic is basically a high quality MP3 put on a MicroSD card. The music will be encoded to 320 kilobytes per second. The cards will come prepackaged with a USB card sleeve so they will be compatible across multiple devices. The music will also be DRM free. You will be free to move the music to any MP3 compatible device of your choosing! The MicroSD cards filled with media will be 1GB in size, and allow for the artist to add and entire album, as well as other chosen extras.

Digit wireless developes next text input

Posted by Kallan Dahn Friday, September 5, 2008 0 comments

A new text input method using "trace" technology has been developed by DigitWireless. The new technology allows users to touch the first letter in the word and slide their finger across the keys to each of the next letters. "Trace" technology requires a phone with a "touch-capacitence enabled keypad". The technology has not been licenced yet by any handset manufacturers, but it is now available as an option. Provided this technology works as advertised, I can see this catch on as the primary text input method of mobile devices. This will eliminate the issues with an screen keypads in higher end mobile devices. I can see this technology be adapted as a mode of input on multi-touch capable touch screen devices like the iPhone. This will certainly help with one handed operation on such devices.

M3e charges your phone by walking

Posted by Kallan Dahn Monday, August 25, 2008 0 comments

Renewable energy company M2E has developed a cell phone charger based on kinetic energy. The charger is power by simply walking! Only six hours of walking will charge the units internal battery and the battery should last between 30 and 60 minutes of talk time. The company expects the chargers to be available in the second or third quarter of 2009. They are continuing to try to advance the technology to be included directly into the cell phones. I personally feel this is a much better use of the technology. Who really wants another charger to manage, remember to take with you, and especially remember to actually plug into your phone. This reminds me of another story I posted early in the life of this blog. "Cell phone gets charged by your electric slide". There is also of course "Wind up cell charger?!". I just don't think green technology is going to catch on in the mobile space unless it is put right into the phones.

Waterproof your Cell Phone!

Posted by Kallan Dahn Saturday, August 9, 2008 0 comments

Finally the day is here that I can use my cell phone while snorkeling! Alright, not quite today, but this should be very soon. I think all of us have run into an issue once or twice with water and our cellular devices. Take a look at the video for the explanation of the product by Golden Shellback. I am very impressed with what I have seen so far!

113 Drivers ticketed for Cell Phone Use

Posted by Kallan Dahn Wednesday, July 23, 2008 0 comments

It seems that drivers in the South East and South Central Seatle area did not heed the warning given when there was a ban put on cellular phone use in Washington.
Drivers face a $124 fine per offence, but unlike the law in California, the drivers may only be ticketed if the officer also believes that the driver violated another law, while using their cellular phone. The law does permit cellular phone use if the driver is using a handsfree device.
More than 300 people have been pulled over for the offence, and 113 were actualy issued tickets. The highway patrol has no official grace period while drivers adjust to the new law.
Just buy a bluetooth headset or car kit already! You can get a great headset for $124. While there are alot of places that still do not prohibit cellular use while driving, its just a good idea!
Think about the last time you were cut off, tail-gated, or watched someone turn right from the left lane. My money says they were probably on their phone, and didn't even realize they were breaking the law!

New 3G mini-laptop?

Posted by Kallan Dahn Thursday, July 17, 2008 0 comments

Computer manufacturer Acer is looking into adding 3G capable chips to the traditional 802.11 b/g access that has become common place with laptops. Currently Acer is considering T-Mobile International , Vodaphone Inc, and Orange to provide HSDPA or HSUPA access so their laptop users will be able to access the internet from anywhere 3G cellular service is available.
Are we going to start to see FREE laptops with 2 year activation. I wouldn't bank on this in the near future as mobile carriers in the United States already don't like to subsidise the handsets. Cellular carriers might decide to jump this hurdle if they can see a significant increase in their top-shelf mobile broadband products.

Japaneese Develop Better Flash Chips

Posted by Kallan Dahn Wednesday, July 16, 2008 0 comments

The Japaneese have done it again. Scientists have developed an new low power flash chip that is capable of lasting many, many years. Conventional flash chips can suffer reduced lifespan when they are written, and rewritten extensivly. These new flash cells called ferroelectric are not only smaller buy may be re-written 100 million times compared to current techology at about 10,000. The new flash chips will also make use of a technology that allows the cells to be used evenly across the chip, and stop the use of spent cells without killing the entire chip. Lifespan of flash memory is currently measured in years. This new memory estimates over 100 years of wear. Flash memory will soon be measured in centenials.

Cell phones get charged by your electric slide

Posted by Kallan Dahn Tuesday, June 24, 2008 0 comments

The week has certainly been the week to find strange charging equipment. This one has got to be the more impracticle that I have ever seen. Orange a company in the UK developed an armband prototype called "Dance Charge". The theory is that the armband stores the kinetic energy from your dance moves, and can use them later to charge you cell. This is getting a little rediculous, how many people are just going to start dancing everytime they need a cell phone charge. I would think a more practicle use for this technology would be to develop a belt (just like the one for holding your pants up) that will store kinetic energy. Movement of any part of your body comes from the hips and waist. This way people could really be charging their phones while they are resting in their rightful place in their belt clip, or pocket doing things that they are already doing anyways. Good technology, bad execution.

Wind up Cell Charger!?

Posted by Kallan Dahn Sunday, June 22, 2008 0 comments

I think this is actually pretty cool. I do however think that now I really have seen everything for a cell phone. This reminds me a little of a product call the finger whisper. I am just not sure how practical a product like this really is. I guess this would be pretty useful for someone out hiking and finds themselves with cell service, but no power.
