Spectrum bridge: spectral license exchange

Posted by Kallan Dahn Friday, September 5, 2008

A new start-up company partially backed by the federal government has launched today. The company allows owners of spectrum licenses to sell the spectrum online. The process does not require an auction through the FCC, but will require FCC approval of each transaction. Spectum bridge will allow the companies to purchase much smaller chunks of spectrum than traditionally available. This is great news for wireless carriers that are looking to increase their spectum holdings in a given area. Smaller carriers can purchase little chunks that they need instead of larger licenses that they may waste a good portion of. This should prove to be a huge factor for increasing competition in the wireless industry by helping to level the playing field between larger carriers and smaller carriers.
