FCC Closer to AWS-3 Rules

Posted by Kallan Dahn Tuesday, September 16, 2008

The FCC is still mulling over a proposal by Chairman Kevin Martin regarding the new AWS-3 auction for the D-block spectrum that didn't sell in the previous 700mhz spectrum auction. The new plan will allow use by WiMax and LTE. The entry price for bidding has also dropped to $750 Million. This will allow smaller carriers to participate in the auction. This space would be prime for companies like MetroPCS or Cricket. Both companies are expanding very aggressively, and being LTE ready for 2009 would certainly make a difference in their business model once LTE is ubiquitos across a good portion of the country. The FCC expects to finalize the auction rules by the end of the year, and auction in 3rd or 4th quarter 2009.
