The carriers that signed on to exclusively use the Iphone are not the only place that had customers in a frenzy with the release of the new Iphone 3G. Applc sold 1 million of the newest Iphone in the first weekend. The celebration at Apple I am sure did not last long, as only 4 days after release the "best Iphone" was unlocked for use by any other compatabile carrier.
The process was done using a sim card adapter, and a program called jailbreak. The program tricks the phone into thinking that a "test" sim has been inserted into the phone, and the phone them authenticates to the network. After this authentication happens, the rest of the network operation is handed off to the inserted sim card. The wafer thin adapter does not currently have a price listed for open market sale.
