Samsung communications has restructured their company. The world's largest manufacturer of flash memory chips has divided their company in two divisions. The Digital Media and Communications division, which will be focused on cell phones, TV, and other consumer products. The other devision, The Device Solutions Division will maintain ownership over manufacturing memory chips, and displays. The demand for Samsung's products as of late has been lacking. This lack of demand is also responsible for the restructuring of the company.

In an effort to reduce the costs of its debt reorganization Motorola will lay off about 4,000 workers. Approximately 3,000 from the mobile device unit alone. Motorola has recently announced other layoffs in December. Between the two rounds of layoffs Motorola expects to save $1.5 Billion in 2009.
Alcatel-Lucent has announced that they have replaced former CEO Patricia Russo. The chairman Serge Tchuruk was also replaced. Both Russo and Tchuruk turned in their resignation last month. The company has been struggling since the merger of the companies Alcatel (Paris) and Lucent (US). The company has not made a quarterly profit in over two years. I bet we can guess why the resignations were turned in. Anxious to begin turning a profit again Ben Verwaayen takes the helm to try to turn this ship around. Ben was former vice chairman of Lucent's management board. Philippe Camus was appointed to the position of non-executive chairman. Phileppe is the former CEO of European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company. Ben and Phileppe should not have such a hard job in front of them. They simply have to keep the company from loosing $7 Billion every two years, and everything will be O.K.
Nokia is going to do some proverbial house cleaning in their "Services and Software" Unit. Nokia has decided that it needed to consolidate the software delivery services into one nice package. (not a bad idea if you ask me) The companies Internet-Centric focus will remain unchanged, and current content delivery services are not expected to be discontinued, just consolidated. Lucky for employees that Nokia maintains a good track record with regard to pink slipping their employees. Nokia expects most of the 200 affected workers will be able to be re-assigned to new projects, or given a different role within the unit.
"This year we plan to hire more people into the Services & Software unit than the number of affected employees, so we expect that many employees will be able to transition to new jobs within Nokia," said Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President, Services & Software.
Nokia hinted at "Context Aware" Services delivered to users pockets. Nokia may be trying to hit the inside track to user targeted Advertisement on Cell phones, or they may have something a little less sinister up their sleeves. Either way they believe the re-organization will give them faster time to market with emphasis on new innovative products and services.
