website releases details of another attempt at a Blackberry that flips
closed in a clam shell design
The model number will the the 9670 indicating it may be a flip bold.
The device will also have wifi packed in in B, G, and N flavors.
Sprint announced today that the Blackberry Curve 3G will be released in
2011. The Curve 3G will include Blackberry 5.0 software out of the box,
and is upgradable to 6.0 when that is ready for prime time. Device
features include the new staple optical track pad, 2.0 MP camera, media
keys, Wifi, and will handle up a a 32Gb media card. The device will
include a 2Gb media card in the retail kit. The Blackberry is being
billed as a low cost 3G smart phone for social networking, but will
include support for Sprint TV, Sprint Music Store, and the standard
gauntlet of Blackberry App World Applications.
According to Gartner an independent Electronics Research firm, Google's
Android operating system will out RIM's Blackberry software from the
number two spot world-wide by the end of 2010. By the end of 2014
Google will have their sights set on taking down Nokia and their Symbian
platform.
Gartner predicts that Android and Symbian will be the top operating
platforms for mobile devices in 2014 accounting for nearly 59.8 percent
of the mobile OS sales.
Gartner further predicts that open source operating systems will
continue to sustain a greater than 60 percent hold on the market place.
Operating platforms for companies like Apple and RIM will continue to
grow in units, but the growth rate will be well below industry averages.
Sprint has released the Blackberry Bold 9650 ahead of schedule. The device was originally scheduled to release May 23rd, but is available now on Sprint's website for $199 with a 2 year agreement. Just like other devices on Sprint's network the Blackberry Bold will require and Everything Data, or a Simply Everything Plan. There is no word yet as to if Sprint has released this device in stores early as well, or if it is only available early via the web.

After fleeting glimpses of the device have swirled the net, sources at RIM indicate that the blackberry bold 9800 slider will head to AT&T about June. The carrier has already placed an order for well over 1 million units. The device will be released with the long awaited blackberry OS 6. This will be the first device to hit market with this version of the blackberry software pre-installed. AT&T did manage to get an exclusivity agreement on the device, but there is no confirmation as to how long it will remain exclusive. A CDMA version of the device should be available Q4 from Sprint.

The device will include 3.2 MP camera, EVDO, world roaming capability, and the classic Tour keypad.

The 9100 series Pearl will sport 3G, 624Mhz processor, and Wifi. The new Pearl will support the 802.11n Wifi protocol for the first time of any Blackberry.
Torch Mobile announced today that they have been aquired by Research In Motion. Torch mobile is an application development company that has developed the IRIS web browser. The IRIS browser is a web-kit based software. This new browser is bound for the Blackberry platform. This comes shortly after an announcement by RIM to bring both Macromedia's Flash, and Microsofts Silverlight to their Blackberry platform.
Verizon has announced today that the Blackberry Storm will now have access to the VCast suite of products. The Storm will be the first smart device in Verizon's line up to be given the privlidge of VCast video services. Verizon Video serivce includes full length television programs, and live sporting events. The service will carry an additional $10 monthly fee for users who wish to take advantage of it. The VCast application must be downloaded before it can be used.
RIM is named the manufacturer of the top selling smart phone for the first quarter of 2009. The familier Blackberry Curve soared past even the newest iPhone unseating Apple as the king of smart phones. According to a research study conducted by NPD Group, RIM's market share in the consumer sector rose 15% from the previous quarter. RIM is currently also holding the lions share of the consumer smart phone segment with a 50% penetration rate. Apple and Palm both watched their market share shrink by 10%.
