At&t Will Unlock Some Phones

Posted by Kallan Dahn Monday, May 24, 2010 0 comments

Part of a settlement for a class action lawsuit At&t will provide unlock codes for their device. The customer must have been an active subscriber for 90 days, and be able to provide proof of purchase for the device. There are two exceptions to this; devices that At&t will have exclusively for longer than 10 months will not be unlocked at all. Devices with an exclusivity period of less than 10 months will have to wait for the 10 month period to expire before AT&T will provide the unlock code.

At&t has certainly been apprehensive to increase their offering in the cellular arena as of late. They have been content to follow Verizon's lead in the industry and price their plans almost identically to their competitors. Finally after several changes to the expectation of their data network At&t has decided to upgrade their data offering. No doubt, this is in some part due to the nuclear holocaust that analysts have unleashed on the quality of their data network. The improvement will come in the form of HSPA+. This 3.5G technology will provide vast improvements in speed to their customers, as well as many much needed capacity improvements. The Goal is to have 250 Million customers covered in this new faster technology by the end of 2010. This upgrade will finish at an interesting time, as Verizon will start to release their 4G technology LTE during the same time frame. Speeds are expected to be double that of the current 7.2 Mbps theoretical maximum of HSPA. Regardless of the fact that At&t has chosen to play the game from the last place position, this will be a positive initiative for customers all around. Even T-Mobile a decidedly smaller national carrier has improved their data network dramatically to 21 Mbps.

After fleeting glimpses of the device have swirled the net, sources at RIM indicate that the blackberry bold 9800 slider will head to AT&T about June. The carrier has already placed an order for well over 1 million units. The device will be released with the long awaited blackberry OS 6. This will be the first device to hit market with this version of the blackberry software pre-installed. AT&T did manage to get an exclusivity agreement on the device, but there is no confirmation as to how long it will remain exclusive. A CDMA version of the device should be available Q4 from Sprint.

Verizon Sweeps Consumer Reports Customer Satisfaction Survey

Posted by Kallan Dahn Tuesday, December 1, 2009 0 comments

Verizon Wireless sweeps all 26 markets surveyed during a Consumer Reports survey.  At&t Mobility however, scores a lack-luster last place finish in 19 out of the 26 markets.  Walter Piecyk, research analyst from Pali Research noted
"Apple's iPhones are the top smart phones in our ratings--actually, among the best of all phones we tested, period--but their exclusive carrier, AT&T, was middling at best in satisfaction," Consumer Reports said. "If you're readying to buy Apple's phone, prepare for possible disappointment with its service and expect to love the phone anyway."
This has been showing that problems with At&t's network may not yet be over.  Users of the iPhone have previously complained about network in areas like New York and San Fransisco, this remained unchanged based on the results of the survey. At&t's network is obviously being ripped apart by the data demand being driven on their network almost exclusively by the iPhone.  At&t has started to upgrade their network to HSPA 7.2 technology.  This high-speed upgrade may significantly reduce the strain being placed on their network, and allow the company a little breathing room to fix things that have gone wrong.  This year At&t replaced Sprint Nextel at the bottom of the survey.  "We appreciate and value all customer feedback," the company said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD blog. "We learn from it and it helps us serve our customers better."
The consumer reports survey is an annual survey that allows wireless users to rank their carrier on criteria such as customer service, network, and reliability.  The survey sample consisted of 50,000 consumer reports readers residing in 26 select cities.

Sprint "Most Reliable 3G Network"; No Claims Verizon

Posted by Kallan Dahn Wednesday, November 25, 2009 0 comments

verizon Wireless is taking Sprint to task over their recent "Most Reliable Network" claim.  After a complaint filed by Verizon Wirelss a national advertising group recommended that Sprint pull its "Most Dependable 3G Network" advertsing.  This comes just a few month after a similar battle between Verizon and At&t, and amidst another battle that has flared up between the two carriers over an ad campagn launched by Verizon.  The NAD (National Advertising Division) of the Better Business Beureau looked over the most recent Nielson drive test data and discovered that Verizon Wireless actually had fewer dropped calls and performed better durring the tests in terms of session reliability.

Matthew Sullivan, a Sprint spokesman said that Sprint would appeal on the basis that the NAD did not take signal strength information into their desicion.  Sprint claims the signal strength is "the most effective criteria for determining indoor use."  Sprint stands behind their claim, and is confident that the appeals process will produce the results they are looking for.

At&t will begin carrying the Hp Ipaq Glisten in the comming weeks.  The Windows Mobile 6.5 device has a Motorola Q-Series inspired design.  The bar style device with a full QWERTY will raise the bar with an AMOLED touch display, Wifi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and HSDPA.  The built in radios will be quad-band GSM, and Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA.  The smart device will round out with onboard GPS, a 3.1 MP camera, Office Mobile, Facebook, and Voice Commander Software.  Expected Cost $230 sans rebates.

At&t has decided to follow suit in a large game of what seems to be follow the leader, by jumping into the prepaid broadband market just a short time after Verizon Wireless announced their forey into the market.
The new plans by At&t called DataConnect pass will be available for At&t certified netbooks and laptops.  The pricing is as follows.
Daily Plan: $15 - 75Mb data cap
Weekly Plan: $30 - 250Mb data cap

At&t If You Can't Beat Them, Join Them

Posted by Kallan Dahn Thursday, November 19, 2009 0 comments

At&t was recently denied their injunction to force Verizon to pull their "There's a map for that" advertising campaign.  I guess At&t figures that if you can't beat them you should join them, because that is exactly what At&t has done.  The recent attack ad from big blue is claiming to be the fastest 3g experience, Talk and surf at the same time, offer the most popular smart phones, and access to over 100,000 applications.  The are claiming the "Best 3G experience".  The ad seems essentially like the 4th grade come back of "yeah well your a booger head!"  You can watch the ad for yourself via Youtube HERE

Verizon Responds to At&t Lawsuit

Posted by Kallan Dahn Wednesday, November 18, 2009 0 comments

Verizon has finally responded to At&t's lawsuit.  In the response Verizon filed a 53 page document with federal courts in Georgia.  The filing reveals that Verizon feels pulling the ads from public view would cause greater harm to the public that it would to At&t.  "At&t did not file this lawsuit because Verizon's "There's A Map For That" advertisements ar untrue; At&t sude because Verizon's ads are true and the truth hurts", Verizon outlined in the document.  The document went on further to say that At&t is at fault for not investing in the proper infrastructure for the growth in data that was caused by the iPhone on their network.  As a result the usefulness to smart phone users has suffered.
"At&t may not like the message that the ads send, but this court should reject its efforts to silence the messenger."

AT&T Ammends Lawsuit Against Verizon

Posted by Kallan Dahn Saturday, November 14, 2009 0 comments

At&t has decided to ammend its lawsuit against Verizon Wireless.  Prompted by Verizon's newest commercial "Island of Misfit Toys".  At&t claims this commercial in particular is misleading to customers.  At&t feels that with the heavy Christmas handset season rapidly approching that this advertisement could irreparibly damage their company.  At&t has pushed for the advertisements to be pulled from air, and will most likely try to seek an injunction against the entire ad campaign.
