540 cell sites received a long awaited upgrade from AT&T. The upgrade added 850 mhz support the existing network to increase the in-building coverage, and the capacity of the 3G network in several cities. Currently downtown Atlanta GA, and parts of Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb,Gwinnett, and Fayette counties have been upgrade. San Fransisco, and New York are next on AT&T's list for a similar service enhancement. AT&T has plans to upgrade several cities before the end of 2009.
Verizon wireless just added two new phones to their line up from Samsung. Both phones share a few common features including: CDMA, EVDO, quad band GSM/GPRS, Stereo Bluetooth, MicroSD Expandable memory, and a 2 MP camera onboard.
The Saga is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Smart Device containing a touch screen and simultaneously sporting a full QWERTY keyboard. The phone also includes an optical mouse, Wifi, and comes pre-loaded with Opera's mobile web browser. The price tag on the Saga will be $200 after contracts and rebates. The Saga can be purchased via all channels starting December 1st.
The Renown is a standard clamshell phone equipped with VCast, MP3 , and Visual voicemail. This handset will sell, after contracts and rebates, for $180. The Renown will also be available December 1st in all channels.
T-Mobile has decided to update its network. A move that has been long over-due. Las Vegas is the first of 20 additional markets that will fall into the ranks of their third Generation Data Network. T-Mobiles nework will utilize 1700 mhz AWS. Compatible phones will be able to use this spectrum both for voice as well as UMTS high speed data. T-Mobile has let slip they will be announcing an HSDPA capable device they describe as a "new and compelling data-centric, all-in-one devices."Although they did not elaborate more on either devices or markets to be upgraded, T-Mobile subscribers have something to be happy about. This is a big step for the company to try an influence markets they they have been previously near invisible to the group of users wanting data centric services.
