Samsung Agrees To Sell It's Stake In Symbian

Posted by Kallan Dahn Tuesday, September 2, 2008 0 comments

Samsung has decided to sell its stake in Symbian to Nokia. Samsung was the last shareholder that Nokia needed to gain approval from, and will move forward with it's purchase of Symbian. Symbian is a mobile software company behind Symbian OS that many phones run on. The Symbian foundation has been formed by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DoCoMo. In partnership with At&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, and Vodaphone will merge Symbian OS, S60, UIQ, and MOAP into one open source mobile platform. Nokia is purchasing the remaining shares of Symbian to give both Symbian OS, and S60 to the foundation. The foundations goal is to increase innovation within the mobile community. Foundation members will not pay royalties for the use of this new mobile operating system.
